“Leermoment tijdens een middag vol amusement”

Ongeveer 1600 basisschoolleerlingen uit Den Haag vallen op 8 en 9 februari met hun neus in de boter! Deze kinderen uit groep 6 en 7 doen namelijk mee aan het educatieve dansproject ‘Nederlands Dans Theater II Danst’. Speciaal voor deze kinderen danst Nederlands Dans Theater II een bijzondere voorstelling in het Lucent Danstheater. Voorafgaande aan de voorstelling nemen de leerlingen een kijkje achter de schermen bij het gezelschap en krijgen ze een dansworkshop op school.

Op maandagochtend 8 februari zit ik in de zaal met nog een paar honderd leerlingen die zenuwachtig in het Lucent Danstheater zitten te popelen. De meeste van de kinderen hebben geen idee wat hen te wachten staat en kijken verbaasd om hun heen. Ik voel me weer net een kind van 10 en voel ook de spanning. Dan gaat het doek open en komt de presentatrice Marlies op het toneel. Marlies vertelt wat we als eerste te zien krijgen, twee dansstukken van de choreografen Paul Lightfoot en Sol Léon: Skew Whiff en Shutters Schut.

En dan gaat het echt beginnen! Voor de meeste leerlingen is het best wel een beetje vreemd om te zien dat de dansers behoorlijk ‘blote’ kostuums aan hebben. Ook vinden ze de bewegingen soms erg grappig wat ik merk aan het gegniffel in de zaal. Ondanks dat het kijken naar dans voor de meeste leerlingen nieuw en onbekend is, klinkt er een luid applaus als het eerste stuk Skew Whiff is afgelopen. Ook wordt er volop gejuicht na afloop van het tweede stuk Shutters Shut.

Vervolgens worden we meegenomen in de wereld van de theatertechniek. We zien allerlei soorten licht en maken een dolle rit in een achtbaan die op een groot scherm wordt geprojecteerd. Het jonge publiek is niet meer te houden. Iedereen om me heen is aan het gillen, juichen en zelfs lachen. Want er zijn ook grappige dingen te zien op het toneel. Twee leerlingen uit het publiek mochten zelfs op het podium komen om een vraag te stellen aan danseres Fabienne Vegt. Zij werd onder andere naar haar ergste dansblunder gevraagd. Vervolgens zagen we Minus 16 van choreograaf Ohad Naharin. Het enthousiaste gelach en gejuich tijdens de techniekshow werd voortgezet tijdens deze choreografie. Er zitten zeer leuke stukken in en er worden zelfs een aantal leerlingen uit het publiek gehaald om mee te doen.

Tussen de dansstukken en techniekshow door werden een aantal leerlingen uitgekozen om op het podium te komen om zelf ook een dansstukje te laten zien die ze in de klas geleerd hadden van een dansdocent van het Koorenhuis. Ter voorbereiding van de voorstelling hebben de scholen ook een lesbrief behandeld en kregen een aantal klassenvertegenwoordigers een rondleiding achter de schermen bij het Nederlands Dans Theater. Het hele project is een groot feest!

Dit project vind ik een zeer goed initiatief van het Nederlands Dans Theater in samenwerking met het Koorenhuis. De kinderen leren over moderne dans, van de geschiedenis tot de uitvoering. Ze worden in het hele proces van de voorstelling meegenomen en betrokken. Het is voor de leerlingen naast een leermoment ook zeker een super leuk middagje vol amusement.

Alexander Ekman is making a new work for NDT II. We are all very excited about what it will become. He will work with live musicians from Holland Symfonia who will share the stage with the dancers. On our website you can find studio previews!

Next to Alex' creation we will bring classics from Lightfoot and León's repertoire for NDT II. I look forward to seeing these works again. The live orchestra will surely bring something extra to the show. The former Nederlands Ballet Orkest, now Holland Symfonia, is almost our age and has been accompanying NDT ballets for almost 50 years. It's good to have them with us in this Jubilee season.

Nederlands Dans Theater I tour Oslo, 26-30 November 2009.

26 November: The office staff of Nederlands Dans Theater waves us goodbye and wishes us good luck for our Oslo tour!

The Nederlands Dans Theater I technicians arrived a day before the company and started working yesterday. They’re enjoying their lunch in the canteen of the Opera, in a couple of hours our general rehearsal will start.

29 November: The shop in the Opera is selling our merchandise very well. After the last performance there is nothing left…

Wow… Isn’t this amazing? 1382 seats and all Nederlands Dans Theater performances sold out!

Next to the performances the dancers also have to rehearse. In the studio’s of the Opera they’re working on the new Crystal Pite choreography and on stage there are rehearsals of Vanishing Twin (Jirí Kylián).

30 November: After three successful performances we’ll go back to The Netherlands, enjoying the view of the snowy nature of Norway.

At the airport the snow keeps on falling.. luckily our flight is not delayed and we arrive safely at Schiphol.

The architect selection for our new building is starting. To get a better idea of what the people of the City of The Hague find important for this new theatre complex, the architect selection committee has opened up a survey online. Here everyone who is interested can mention ideas, concerns and preferences; for our new house as well as the Spui square.

Many people are reacting and it will be very interesting for us, in the committee, to see what the focus of our local community is. From what I've heard so far, respondents are giving serious comments. Things we can work with. Sustainability and openness being important words. That I can embrace wholeheartedly.

Two more days til Switch 10!!!!!!!!! There have been some minor bumps along the way but hopefully everything will be alright on the night. I'm so excited to see all the choreographies on stage. We had one runthrough on Tuesday where we saw very beautiful and also very funny work. Finally all the long hours of hard work (after work!) will pay off. It's going to be wonderful.  We have a band playing during the breaks, and 2 dj's for the after-party. Riley Watts has designed the tshirts like last year but also the flyers, posters and the programme book all of which you can pick up on the night! So kom even kijken!!!!!!!!

For a while now we have been discussing the possibilities for a new theatre complex for Nederlands Dans Theater. There we would join forces with The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Conservatoire as well as the house programming (opera, dance, music, etc). Our current house is falling apart at the seams - Carel Birnie always said it was not built for eternity - and it needs major improvements. So many that building something new is more effective.

We see great opportunites here. Not just to improve our facilities and be more welcoming to the public. It's a great chance to form new alliances on the artistic as well as the business side; this will benefit Nederlands Dans Theater in its own development. And what about the square in front: with a new set-up, this could become a more inviting place for people to spend time.

Recently we've started a new phase in all these developments. The architect selection has started. I'm hoping for interesting creatives to sign up and for a good competition. Hopefully by this time next year we will have a great design and a go from the City so we can start making this dream come true.

It is so nice to enjoy the Holland Dance Festival. All these companies with a link to NDT are performing in The Hague. The beauty of it is that while all have similar roots, the outcome is very different. There is no comparison to be made between them; the common ground perhaps is quality. I'm out every night with dance; my learning curve is steep! ;-)

In any case it is a prolonged family reunion with lots of interaction. Tonight Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will show their work in our house; looking forward to it immensely.

Wat een week vorige week... Eerst 3 dagen knalhard werken zodat alles tot in de puntjes was voorbereid, en vanaf woensdag de Jubileumvoorstellingen. Het Openingsgala was fantastisch: de Koninklijke familie, ministers, de dansers van het 1e uur en natuurlijk alle leden van onze Society Nederlands Dans Theater. Iedereen in black tie, wat de sfeer extra bijzonder maakte.

Donderdag de premiere, nu toegankelijk voor 'gewoon' publiek. Ook een feestelijke avond en weer zag iedereen er gelukkig uit. Zaterdag ontving DAMEN Shipyards, onze hoofdsponsor, 200 relaties in Studio 3. Met een praatje van Jim Vincent, een uitleg van Johan Inger en een rondleiding op het toneel een bijzondere avond. Voor (relaties van) sponsors gaan er deuren open die normaliter voor publiek gesloten blijven...

De week sloten we af met het reünie feest waar alle (oud-)medewerkers van het Nederlands Dans Theater aanwezig waren. Wat leuk om al die mensen elkaar in de armen te zien vallen! Mensen die 30 jaar geleden samen gedanst hebben en elkaar sindsdien niet meer gezien hebben. Wederom: bijzonder! Naar verluid is er nog tot laat door gefeest.

Maandagochtend werden we door Theater aan het Spui getrakteerd op een heerlijk ontbijt: verse jus, champagne, scrambled eggs... smullen. Jammer dat er niet meer mensen waren, waarcshijnlijk lag iedereen nog in z'n bed. Deze week is een rare werkweek: iedereen zit achter z'n bureau met 'watten in het hoofd'. Moe, maar zeer voldaan!

And now the first performances of the Jubilee are behind us. What a party! So many people with us, ranging from Her Majesty Queen Beatrix and her family, our professional colleagues, lots of fans in the audience (sold out!), to many many members of our NDT family.

I am exhausted, but also exhilarated. These days melancholy meets excitement. We close a period and start a new one. The word challenging doesn't even begin to describe it! It's great to be a part of this.

Zie contstant mensen door de gang rennen. Iedereen is razend druk hier. En af en toe zie je al mooie voorproefjes voor volgende week. Ben benieuwd!
